We did it!

As you can see from the pictures, we finally achieved my final goal for the Freewheels project.

I am very happy.  My daughter was not so happy for most of the ride, as she didn’t like the fact that I insisted on closing the mesh, easily see-through cover over her for extra protection for this trip.  In the end, she enjoyed seeing the sights, like the forest we rode through, the Canada Geese, and some construction equipment in action.

Some of the trails to the east of Marsland Rd have horrible loose gravel that even a mountain bike would be lucky to get through, nevermind a road hybrid with a trailer.  I’ll be reporting that to the city/region.  I also went an extra km because I initially forgot my GPS for the regional bike study, and went back home to get it.

9.16 km.  36:33 travel time  (longer to avoid the major roads for most of the ride).  Total kms for the project up to 329 (but 6 more coming to get home tonight)

Yay!  We did it!

8km Family Bike Ride!

Last night we went out after dinner for another family bike ride.  A bit more ambitious this time, aiming to get all 4 of us (3 bikes and 1 trailer) over to RIM Park, down the Grand River Trail that runs through Grey Silo golf course.

There used to be an image of the trail map here. Wouldn't you know it - the one time I try to refer to an image on another site rather than copying it for myself, and they delete the image of the trail map and I can't find a copy anywhere on the web, so now you don't get to see it :(

It takes us a couple of km of mostly bike paths just to get to the “You Are Here” above, and then we made it to around where the words “Walter Bean Grand River Trail” are on the red dotted path, stopped to look at the river up close and get bitten by mosquitos, and then headed back at dusk.

I took a couple video snips with our video camera, but I’m not going to try to post them unless a couple of you comment in to request it to prove there is enough readership to merit it :) .  It takes a bit of time to transfer through an old computer and eventually to youtube.

Anyway, I am once again thankful to the Ziggy’s Project, and very happy that it has allowed us to create a more healthy and balanced family lifestyle.  I am extremely proud of my 7 year old for “going the distance” without complaining, even when it was clearly tough on some of the up-hill parts to get back home.

Weekly summary

Once again, not very weekly.  I was on vacation last week, doing some camping at The Pinery.

Meanwhile, though, I’ve done a couple more bike rides with both kids (took the long way home from a newly found park in our neighbourhood and added up to 3km… not too bad), and this week at work I biked in T,W,Th.

Feels great.  I definitely have more energy doing this rather than going through many whole days in a row with the only exercise being walking from house to car and from car to office building.

Also, because I’m using the car so much less, my insurance agent saved me over $100 for the cycling season!  Give yours a call, they might do the same for you.

I think I might have set (or come close to setting) some new records, too.

Tuesday:  13:58 to work, 6.00 km.  On the way home, stopped at Laurier pool to help out with juggling my kids swimming lessons, so didn’t time it.

Wednesday: 14:51 to work, 5.93 km.  14:30 home, which is very impressive considering the headwind!.  Now up to 273km total since I got the bike.

Thursday:  No measurements because I stopped to take pictures of a contractor parked in the bike lane on Columbia so I could report it to by-law:
